What is Case-Hardening Steel
Case -hardening steels are those that have a high core toughness. They usually have relatively low carbon content ranging from 0.10% to 0.30%. The surface hardness of the case-hardening steel and the core properties are obtained by hardening and tempering.
Due to this hardening and tempering process, the steel forms a hard surface layer which is wear-resistant and a core that is really tough. For the same reason, the steel can withstand high impact stresses and does not wear easily.
Case-hardening is usually done once the part has taken the final shape. But it can also be done to increase the hardening element content of barsto be used in pattern welding or any other such processes.
