Tool Steel: All You Need to Know About Tool Steel, Tool Steel Grades Available
What is Tool Steel
Tool steel is usually created by melting and processing until they acquire properties that will help them shape other metals into useful components. They are wrought products that can withstand high temperatures and heavy loads.
Carbide formers such as chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, and tungsten are commonly found in tool steels. Cobalt or nickel are usually added to enhance their performance at high temperatures.
While these steels are provided in the soft form to create tool components, they can be heat-treated to harden once the tools are formed.
Based on their composition and properties, tool steels are of 7 types:
- High-speed steels
- Hot-work steels
- Cold-work steels
- Water-hardening tool steels
- Shock-resisting steels
- Low-alloy special-purpose tool steels
- Low-carbon mold steels
What are the Applications of Tool Steel
Tool steel has several applications. A few of them are:
- Forming and cutting plastics and metals
- Slitting steel coils
